Sportsbooks set spreads to attract roughly balanced money on both sides. The number doesn't predict the final margin - it estimates the line at which equal money will be wagered on each team.
Key numbers matter
In NFL, certain margins (3, 7, 10) occur far more often than others because of scoring increments. Buying or selling points across these key numbers changes win probability disproportionately.
